Choosing the right photographer for you.
How to Find the Right Photographer
Finding the perfect photographer can feel a bit overwhelming—especially with so many talented individuals out there, each offering their own unique style and services. Here’s a guide to help you narrow down your choices and ensure you find a photographer that aligns with your vision, budget, and overall experience.
Price Range: $150 - $1200
Photography pricing can vary widely, and it’s essential to start by setting a realistic budget. Whether you’re looking for a mini session or a full day of coverage, most family photographers’ rates typically fall somewhere between $150 and $1200. The higher the price, the more experience, artistry, and service you’re likely to get. Be clear about what you can spend, but remember: this is an investment in capturing memories that will last a lifetime.
Someone charging at the bottom of the scale likely is starting out, therefore has less experience and may not be registered, insured or properly trained. So be careful when hiring a cheap photographer for newborn sessions that hasn’t had training in safe posing.
And while the type of camera gear you have isn’t all that matters, you better believe the photographers charging top dollar-are using top of the line cameras and lenses that way out perform the ones the beginners are using, and theres a noticeable difference!
Style: Classic or Trending? Dark and Moody or Bright and Airy?
Photography is an art, and every photographer has their own aesthetic. Some prefer a classic, timeless look with natural colours and gentle editing. Others might lean towards modern trends, like dark and moody edits that add drama or bright and airy styles that feel light and romantic.
I describe my photography as cinematic dark and moody, but i can sometimes adapt a dreamy aesthetic when shooting maternity and outdoor sessions. My colours are generally true to life with a nostalgic film edge.
Before reaching out to a photographer, ask yourself:
What style matches my personality, home easthetic and vision?
Do I want images that feel timeless or ones that stand out as trendy and unique?
Look at their portfolio. Does their editing style speak to you?
Choosing a photographer whose style you already love means you’re more likely to adore your final images.
What Do They Offer? Prints or Digital?
One of the most overlooked but important considerations is what your photographer includes in their package. Do they offer high-quality prints and albums, or will you receive digital images only?
If you’re someone who loves having tangible memories, you might prefer a photographer who can guide you through printing and design. However, if you’re comfortable navigating online printing labs or crafting albums yourself, digital-only might be just right.
Ask:
Will I receive an online gallery?
Do they sell professional-grade prints, albums, or canvases?
Do I have the time and knowledge to handle printing myself?
Quick, Good, or Cheap? You Can’t Have All Three
It’s an old saying, but it’s true: you can have quick, good, or cheap—but you can’t have all three at once. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, be realistic about the level of artistry and service you’ll receive. If you want high-quality images that are thoughtfully edited and artfully captured, expect to pay more and potentially wait a little longer for delivery.
Remember: you’re paying for more than just someone to click a button. You’re investing in their experience, creativity, and the hours spent curating and editing your images.
Final Thoughts
The “right” photographer is the one who feels like the perfect fit for you. Take time to explore portfolios, ask questions, and find someone who shares your vision and understands how to bring it to life.
